5 Hacks I Learned After Switching to Period Panties (6 Months Review)
Six months ago, I made a switch that completely changed how I experience my period.
I stopped buying disposable pads every single month and started wearing Comfolla period underwear instead.
When you first make the switch, it can feel like a brand new world. You wonder: How do I wash them? Will they stain? How many pairs do I actually need?
After six months of wearing, washing, and testing them through real life, from heavy flow days to long days out, here are the 5 practical hacks I wish someone had told me from Day 1.
1. Rinse in COLD Water Immediately After Wearing
Here is a rule you should never break: Hot water is the enemy of period care.
When you take off your period underwear, head straight to the sink and rinse them in cold water until the water runs clear.
Why cold water? Blood contains proteins that react to heat. If you use hot or even warm water, it actually "cooks" the blood into the fibers and sets the stain permanently. Cold water breaks it down naturally so your pairs stay fresh and stain-free every time.
2. Have At Least 4-5 Pairs in Rotation
If you are planning to make period underwear your main routine, one or two pairs won't be enough to carry you through a full cycle.
Because of the high-absorbency layers engineered into Comfolla pairs, they take a little longer to air-dry than regular cotton panties. Having 4 to 5 pairs in your rotation gives you total peace of mind. While two pairs are drying on the line, you have fresh ones ready to wear without running out mid-cycle.
3. Match Your Absorbency to Your Flow
Not all period days are created equal, and neither are your pairs!
On Day 1 and Day 2, when your flow is at its peak, you want your high-absorbency or heavy-flow pairs that offer up to 12 hours of leakproof protection. On Day 4 or 5, when you are mostly spotting, switch to lighter pairs.
Building a balanced collection of light and heavy absorbencies means you are always comfortable and covered, no matter what stage your cycle is in.
4. Carry a Wet Bag Everywhere You Go
Transitioning to period underwear doesn't mean you have to stay couped up at your house.
If you need to change while at school, work, or running errands across town, always carry a small, waterproof wet bag in your handbag. It provides discreet, leakproof, and odor-proof storage for used pairs until you get back home to rinse them out. No fuss, no mess, and no awkward moments.
5. Skip the Fabric Softener Completely
When it’s laundry time, it is tempting to dump in a capful of fabric softener so everything smells extra sweet. Don't do it!
Fabric softeners leave behind a invisible waxy coating over fabrics. On period panties, that coating clogs up the built-in absorbent layers, making them less effective at trapping liquid over time. Stick to standard laundry soap, line-dry them in the sun, and they will keep performing like new for up to two years.
Freedom Means Comfort on Your Terms
Switching to reusable period underwear isn't just about saving money every month or reducing plastic waste, it’s about stepping into your cycle with dignity and confidence.
